As a friend of the court I frequently help mediate/settle cases when mandatory settlement conferences are scheduled and time constraints prevent the court from spending sufficient time with the parties. As counsel I have mediated and negotiated more than 30 complete divorce settlements.

Never one exclusively-varies with the case, probably more often transformative, but more facilitative if parties are educated about the process and know what they want. Evaluative at mandatory settlement conferences as a friend of the court. Always educate parties as to their rights if they are pro per.
